Artist Statement
Referencing star patterns and imagined constellations are the basis for the images I experiment with. The phenomenon of placing meaning and understanding to the night skies is intrinsic and part of our cultural history. Being captivated by our universe exposes our hopes and our fears of planetary solitude and awakens the remnants of reality and fabrication.
In this body of work I am creating self-contained constellations, simulating the wonder that unites many generations of civilizations. Using popular imagery and icons of our time (i.e. a horse shoe, a caulking gun, an eyeball etc.), I present a narrative which is both poetic and deceptive. Comical elements in society are ideas that I gravitate towards and use to inspire my work. I attempt to integrate the narrative in the work as a subtle addition, without forcing it to be too obvious. As in the constellations, there is the assumption that patterns created by the stars carry an indisputable meaning to them, and it is with this misapprehension that the viewer may become more vulnerable with every layer. In these works, I explore the fine line between imagination and reality.
The use of artifice to disarm the viewer is deliberate. I use stars as vehicles to discover challenging scenarios that are humorous, but that also force us to let go of any preconceived notions in order to discover the unexpectedly beautiful.
